Designing With Your Pets In Mind

Living with our furry friends can create some challenges in furnishing our homes. We must consider if they have short hair that will stick into the fabric or long hair that will gather on the cushions and skirt, if they like to "fluff" the cushion before circling and flopping down, thereby snagging the fabric with their nails or use it as a scratching post... We love them, we share our home with them and they are part of the family. The challenge is finding the right fabric or leather that will withstand the wear and tear, so we are all happy.

Leather is a great option for preventing animal hair from penetrating. It wears well and ages beautifully. Many leathers are finished with a protective top coat. A good grain structure provides interest to your d├ęcor while being rugged enough to survive everyday life.

Fabric options abound. High performance fabrics are resistant and can take the wear and tear of everyday life. Some are water repellant. Slipcovers are another option by providing easy cleanability. I encourage you to take home the fabric or leather swatch you are considering and see if pet hair sticks to it or wipes or vacuums off easily.
