Sondra Hannan and Lydia Mason ventured off to this year's Spring Furniture Market in High Point, NC to explore the vast array of showrooms providing a first look at new releases as well as the latest design trends. As always we were in search of new vendors and unique pieces to bring back to Tampa Bay Furnishings in St. Petersburg, FL. While browsing the showrooms, we couldn’t help but notice certain recurring items and themes that lay the foundation for this year's design trends. Here are some highlights of our visit that will surely add excitement to any interior.
Can anyone say acrylic? Once popular in the 1960s and 1970s, acrylic furniture is making a comeback in a big way providing a clean and sophisticated look. We saw acrylic added to decor in a number of ways from subtle accent as sofa and ottoman feet all the way to whole pieces such as chairs and tables providing a clean, modern look. What we found most exciting were pieces that combined acrylic with a natural component such as the desk pictured below that combines acrylic with a live edge waterfall top to balance the rustic with a modern feel.
Green is here to stay! Though green was the color of last year, it is still popular as providing a bold statement for whole furniture pieces to a subtle accent with pillows and throws. Rich emerald greens and deep pine greens graced sofas, pillows and chairs. Hints of pastels also showed here and there.
Ottomans and more ottomans! Ottomans were another dominant theme that stole the show with their unmatched versatility. Large square ottomans were a popular sight and used in lieu of cocktail tables to provide more real estate for putting your feet up or providing additional seating for guests in a pinch. WE also saw ottomans used to add bold pops of color to a room and in some cases smaller ottomans were clustered together to provide an interesting look along with added utility. Of course there were a number of ottoman options that achieve all of the above as well as provide internal storage.
It is always interesting to see what new styles and colors are introduced and fun to see which ones will become trends in the coming years. Just as in clothing, some trends work great for your style and others not so much. We keep trends in mind but love bringing out YOUR style.
